Piankatank River Escape
The Richmond, Virginia based owners of this Arts and Crafts styled vacation home wanted to take full advantage of the spectacular views from the bluff to the river 40 feet below. The home is located on Virginia's scenic Middle Peninsula. Every square foot of space was maximized on a moderate footprint to allow for large open plan spaces, a first floor Master Suite and a generous recreation space and outdoor deck with three additional bedrooms above. Design cues were taken from the Owner's childhood memories of summers at his grandparents' Rhode Island bungalow.

Contemporary Farmhouse Style Sustainable Design Waterfront Estate
Studio Z worked with the owners to create an open plan design with plenty of space for living, recreation, privacy and serving the needs of extended family. The wrap-around deck overlooks the water feature and connects the main house to the accessible in-law suite with curbless shower. Inside, the home features a two-story entry space with fireplace, open dining and kitchen areas, a private study, and a second floor master suite with balcony overlooking the water. Other features include an apartment style living suite for live at home adult children, a home office, and generous attic and garage space. The home generates its own electric power via solar panels that also provide electricity to the geo-thermal heating and cooling system.
This growing Charlottesville-area family was feeling constricted in their 1960's brick ranch. Studio Z met to hear and fully understand their needs and proposed a 2 story addition and a restructuring to allow a more open plan that flows to meet their lifestyle. Working closely with the homeowners in design collaboration, three dimensional views of both interior and exterior were adjusted to achieve their goals. The result is a complete transformation that "works perfectly" according to the homeowners that finally have the space to breathe and relax.
Church Hill Restoration
Situated in an area of Richmond’s Church Hill prone to
crime and blight, this home was in severe disrepair. Studio Z provided the homeowner with effective design modifications allowing for an open plan layout with better daylighting and sightlines while providing a clean fresh look to the exterior. Many nearby property owners have taken up the cause on behalf of this neighborhood at risk to create better living conditions and a stronger community.
