Single Family Homes - Selected Projects
Arts and Crafts Style Estate
Studio Z incorporated many stylistic and functional design features. The home uses an open daylit plan with a variety of forms and finishes in contect with the wooded site. Private suites, an Au Pair apartment , and structural provisions for a future elevator allow for extended family, housekeeper accomodations, and age-in-place living.
Piankatank River Escape
The Richmond, Virginia based owners of this Arts and Crafts styled vacation home wanted to take full advantage of the spectacular views from the bluff to the river 40 feet below. The home is located on Virginia's scenic Middle Peninsula. Every square foot of space was maximized on a moderate footprint to allow for large open plan spaces, a first floor Master Suite and a generous recreation space and outdoor deck with three additional bedrooms above. Design cues were taken from the Owner's childhood memories of summers at his grandparents' Rhode Island bungalow.
New England Waterfront Estate
Narragansett, Rhode Island
This Rhode Island family wanted their new weekend home to be fully customized to their active lifestyle. Amenities include his-and-her master baths, mahogony entrance surrounds, a remote gameroom, private study, and gourmet kitchen, all organized around a 35 foot grand living space with a 15-foot high vaulted ceiling, all organized to take maximum advantage of the scenic New England coastline.
Contemporary Farmhouse Style Sustainable Design Waterfront Estate
Studio Z worked with the owners to create an open plan design with plenty of space for living, recreation, privacy and serving the needs of extended family. The wrap-around deck overlooks the water feature and connects the main house to the in-law suite. Inside, the home features a two-story entry space with fireplace, open dining and kitchen areas, a private study, and a second floor master suite with balcony overlooking the water. Other features include an apartment style living suite for live at home adult children, a home office, and generous attic and garage space. The home generates its own electric power via solar panels that also provide electricity to the geo-thermal heating and cooling system.
Waterfront Makeover Creates Craftsman Style Retreat
The existing home at this Lake Anna waterfront setting was positioned perfectly but offered little in the way of curb appeal or architectural character (see "before" photo). Studio Z designed a two level garage with workroom and watercraft parking below and made small strategic adjustments to the main house allowing for a new Craftsman style aesthetic to emerge. The result is an increase in value that meets all of the owner's needs and far exceeds the design fee.
Church Hill Restoration
Situated in an area of Richmond’s Church Hill prone to
crime and blight, this home was in severe disrepair. Studio Z provided the homeowner with effective design modifications allowing for an open plan layout with better daylighting and sightlines while providing a clean fresh look to the exterior. Many nearby property owners have taken up the cause on behalf of this neighborhood at risk to create better living conditions and a stronger community.
