Richstone Surfaces Design Studio

Richstone Surfaces received the Commercial Real Estate Development Association NAIOP 2024 Building Award and the Building of the Year Award of Merit and Excellence at the Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association (MBCEA) 55th Annual Conference in San Diego. Studio Z provided the architectural Design services in collaboration with our design partners: Mann-Hughes (Structural Design), Permit ZIP (MEP Engineering), Whitsitt Interiors (Interior Design), and Pietre Construction for making all of the pieces fit.
This forward-looking retail showroom, manufacturing, and warehouse facility features upscale product display areas, mezzanine offices, state of the art CNC manufacturing pods, a greywater reuse system which saves over 1.4 million gallons of freshwater per year, an energy efficient building envelope, and structural capacity to allow for future solar panels.

Masoneilan Dresser
Avon, Massachusetts

Masoneilan Dresser's Avon, MA manufacturing facility had become a frequent meeting place for the company's North American and Pacific Rim personnel. Unfortunately, the few poorly designed meeting areas interspersed around the perimeter of the manufacturing floor no longer provided adequate space. Studio Z Architecture
was brought in to undergoe a comprehensive planning excercise and provide a headquarters building to alleviate the problem. The new facility features skylit central administrative space as well as indirect lighting for all workstation areas. Staggered private offices front the structure with generous overhangs and tinted glass to address the given southern exposure.

The Noelle
Richmond, Virginia

The Mulholland Group approached Studio Z to create a new community center at this 192 unit affordable housing complex. The program called for a facility that would serve as the centerpiece of their eight million dollar efforts to restore a sense of community at The Noelle. The 3,200 square foot facility includes a vaulted community great room, a digital learning center, lounge, laundry and fitness center with adjacent outdoor pool, mini water park, multi-purpose
courts, and playground. “Dorothy’s Place provided the much-needed catalyst for lasting change”, says Jacqueline Poke, Director of Community Affairs for The Mulholland Group. “Our programs focus on education, job preparedness, health and athletics. Studio Z understood our needs and provided the design insight to help convert the apartment complex
into a cohesive community. We have also partnered with Henrico Mental Health Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse and began the Noelle CONNECT Program at our flagship property to deter K-5 youth from engaging in
counterproductive activities. Elementary and middle school students showed a 25% grade improvement and an 83% to 85% pass rate on SOL tests.”

Sylvan Learning Regional Headquarters

Studio Z Architecture, in collaboration with BHC Architects, created this 22,000 SF regional headquarters for Sylvan Learning. This Hunt Valley, MD facility features a flexible open office plan with transparent perimeter offices, conference rooms, and employee lounge and dining amenities.

The Palms

Texas "Hill Country" regional architectural influences were carefully referenced in the redesign of the existing clubhouse at this 492 unit apartment community. Accessibility needs were met through the use of a stone lined, heavy timber covered access ramp that leads to the entry canopy. This award winning project pushed the boundaries of what could be achieved when designing "affordable" housing.
